This company began life in Aberdeen in 1955 as a meat-distribution business but over the years has turned into a chain of frozen-food stores with more than 300 outlets. It expanded rapidly in the 1990s, thanks to two large acquisitions. In recent years a range of non-frozen grocery items has been added, and an extensive rebranding exercise was undertaken in 2009 to emphasise the company’s value-for-money offering. Today Farmfoods is based in Glasgow and Eric Herd, its chairman, oversaw sales of £484.1m in 2009.
