A frozen food pioneer, this Glasgow firm is almost unrecognisable from its 1954 beginnings as a meat-processing business. Expansion into England has been driven by its acquisitions of Wallis Frozen Foods and Capital Freezer Centres in the 1990s. Using promotions such as its “weekend meats” package that combined steaks for Friday, bacon for Saturday breakfast and a roast for Sunday, chairman Eric Herd saw its 300 outlets produce sales of £400.3m in 2006.
