Andrew Michael and Alex Wilding spotted an opportunity during their school holidays in the summer of 1998. They decided to start their own web-hosting service after they failed to find a suitable host for the site they were designing for an A-level project. Their company, Fasthosts, differs from rivals in being fully automated, with an online control panel that enables customers to set up their own accounts, manage their domain names and add new ones instantly.
Clients now include home users, resellers such as web-design agencies, and blue-chip companies including Rolls-Royce and Securicor. They have helped to boost sales 338% a year from an annualised £240,000 in 1999 to £4.6m in 2001.
In March 2001, Fasthosts opened a new data centre at its Gloucester headquarters, which houses 60 staff.
