Alex Wilding and Andrew Michael spotted an opportunity during their school holidays in the summer of 1998 when they failed to find a suitable host for the website they were designing for an A-level project. They decided to start their own web-hosting service, Fasthosts Internet. They say it differs from rivals by offering an online control panel that enables customers to set up their own accounts, manage their domain names and add new ones instantly. Fasthosts claims to manage more than 800,000 internet domains and to ensure safe delivery of 2m e-mails each day. Its sales have grown 106% a year from £1.8m in 2000 to £7.6m in 2002, when it made a profit.
