Since the late 19th century, Fenwick’s store on London’s New Bond Street has been a trusty standby for ladies who lunch. The upmarket department-store chain was founded in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1882, and is still family owned and run: the founder’s great-grandson, Mark Fenwick, is chairman. With 11 stores from Northumberland to Kent, the group is one of the largest department store businesses in Britain. Sales reached £290m in 2010. The retailer also reported that sales increased to £296.4m in 2011.
