The Fenwick family opened its first department store in Newcastle in 1882, and the group remains in family hands. The flagship store in New Bond Street has been a London institution for more than a century, and Fenwick now has 10 stores across England. In 2001, it bought rival Bentalls, which had stores in Kingston and Bracknell, for £71m. Under chairman Mark Fenwick the company’s sales in 2004 reached £264.4m, although this figure excludes a further £53m of sales at in-store concessions.
