With annual sales of £695m in 2006 under chief executive Wynne Griffiths, this Grimsby company says it supplies 40% of the fish eaten in Britain. Owned by its management and the private-equity firm Capvest, Foodvest trades through its Young’s Seafood subsidiary. It also recently bought the European Findus business, giving it a presence in new food markets across the Continent. The company began in 1805 when Elizabeth Young started selling whitebait caught in the Thames at Greenwich. Today it employs more than 6,300 people across 10 countries, and sources fish from more than 30 nations.
