First Utility is one of Britain’s largest independent energy suppliers, serving more than 900,000 homes. In 2015 it started providing electricity and gas in Germany in partnership with Shell, helping push up revenue 51% to £848m. In the same year profits dropped 61% to £6m because of increased administrative costs and an abnormally warm winter. Under chief executive Ian McCaig, 51, the Warwick firm started offering broadband in March with plans to take on rivals such as Sky, BT and Talk Talk.
