This Warwick company provides gas and electricity to 120,000 domestic consumers and small businesses. First Utility’s main selling point is its smart meter, which transmits usage data every 30 minutes to the company. This information is then displayed online so that consumers can monitor their energy consumption and receive an accurate bill. The company recently linked up with an American software firm to interpret meter readings so that consumers can be helped to cut the amount of energy they use. Darren Braham, 46, Marcus Citron, 49, and Mark Daeche, 49, set up the business in 2003. Its profit margins were slim.
