Sir Charles Dunstone, 54, the founder of Carphone Warehouse (which was in the first Fast Track 100 in 1997), was inspired by the popularity of the American chain Five Guys to create this joint venture with its founding Murrell family. The first UK restaurant opened in Covent Garden in 2013, serving cult favourites such as crispy bacon milkshakes and allowing customers to choose as many free toppings as they want for their burgers. Over the past five years it has expanded to 90 sites across the UK. Sales — excluding joint-venture revenues in France, Spain, Germany and Portugal — climbed to £122m last year, under UK chief executive John Eckbert, 51.
