Since Foster + Partners was founded in 1967 it has won more than 500 awards for design excellence, and now has 15 offices worldwide. The firm is responsible for dozens of landmark buildings, including Beijing airport, Wembley stadium, and France’s spectacular Millau viaduct, the world’s highest road bridge. The practice also investigates alternative energy sources and sustainable forms of development. In May 2007, 3i invested a reported £297m in the business for a minority stake. In 2009 the group shut its Berlin and Istanbul offices, making some 300 staff redundant. Despite the recession, sales rose to £153.9m in 2009.
