If your high-street bank can’t give you a personal loan, there is a good chance it will pass you on to a personal loan broker such as Freedom Finance. The Cheshire company says that last year it offered more than £350m in secured loans and mortgages, making on average 70 loans a day. Rupert Webb founded the business in 1983, and in 2000 an American private-equity firm made a £12.4m investment in return for a 55% stake. Sales grew nearly 68% a year from £3.6m in 1999 to £16.7m in 2002.
