This rail haulage operator, formed in 1994, took advantage of the privatisation of the rail industry to make a management buyout of Freightliner in 1996 with £7.5m of venture-capital backing from 3i and Electra. For the previous 31 years, Freightliner had operated as part of British Rail and the National Freight Corporation. Now it operates as two separate subsidiaries, Freightliner and Freightliner Heavy Haul. The London company is led by chief executive Eddie Fitzsimons and achieved sales of £199m in 2004.
