Freightliner specialises in moving cargo containers and bulk freight such as coal around Britain using a fleet of more than 175 locomotives. Led by chief executive Eddie Fitzsimons, the company recently flexed its green credentials when it unveiled a new class of low-emission engines. Private-equity firms 3i and Cognetas backed a management buyout from British Rail in 1996, increasing their stakes in 2005 by buying out employees and retiring management. Sales were £255.3m in 2007.
