Running more than 1,500 trains each week, Freightliner Group claims to be Britain’s largest haulier of maritime freight. In addition to moving containers from five key ports, the group operates bulk rail freight services transporting coal, cement, petrol and waste. It has also expanded into Poland, Germany and Australia. Its fleet now includes 175 locomotives and 3,000 wagons, and from November, will include trains it says will increase haulage capacity and environmental performance. The company was bought from British Rail by 3i and Electra in 1996. In July 2008, Arcapita took it over. Sales reached £270.9m in 2008.
