Before Johnnie Andringa, 49, and his business partners took over Gaia Wind in 2006, the company was based in Denmark and made only a few turbines each year. This year it manufactured and installed 350 wind turbines for farmers, breweries, golf clubs and small businesses with land to spare. Thanks to the government’s feed-in tariff subsidy, the income generated by the turbines usually covers the cost of installation in five to seven years. Gaia Wind is now looking to boost its international sales and has already received orders from the island of Tonga.
