Gala Coral is one of Europe’s biggest betting and gaming operations, with 144 bingo clubs and more than 2,000 betting shops in the UK and Italy. In May, the company sold 23 of its UK casinos to Rank for £205m, and it is in the process of moving its online gaming business offshore. In its financial year to September 2011 – the first set of accounts since a refinancing in 2010 – the Nottingham company recorded an ebitda profit of £261m, but wrote off £550m on the value of previous acquisitions. Under group chief executive Carl Leaver, sales were £1.1 billion in 2011.
