Gala Coral became Europe’s biggest gaming company in 2005 when the bingo and casino operator Gala Group bought the high-street and internet bookie Coral Eurobet. Gala’s three private-equity owners – Candover, Cinven and Permira – all contributed funding for the £2.2 billion deal. Since then, the group has increased its number of outlets by 20%, taking the total to 1,550 betting shops, casinos and bingo halls. Most recently, it bought 44 betting shops from Reuben Page. Sales were £1,227m in 2006, dropping from £7,433m the previous year owing to a change in accounting method.
