When the internet giant AOL decided to offer its British customers the chance to make telephone calls, it turned to Gamma, a voice and data network operator. Paul Banner and Phil Corbishley founded the Newbury company in 2001. They were previously colleagues at the venture-capital firm SCI Private Equity, which now holds a 22% stake in Gamma. Sales have risen 261% a year from an annualised £5.5m in 2002 to £72.2m in 2004. This rapid growth is partly due to the acquisition of three British telecoms resellers. One of them, Uniworld Communications, was bought last year for £10m.
