In April Gatwick broke the record for the number of passengers passing through a single-runway airport in a year, with strong growth in long-haul flyers helping it pass the 44m mark. The airport also saw cargo volumes rise 20% to more than 80,000 tons. Travellers can fly to 226 destinations in 70 countries from the airport, which is owned by a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners. It bought the business in 2009 for a reported £1.5bn and appointed Stewart Wingate, 45, chief executive.
