An American private hospital group set up this company in 1970, expanding into Britain and buying the Harley Street Clinic. General Healthcare was taken private in 1990. It performs operations from appendicectomies to brain surgery at its 46 private hospitals, and claims to account for more than 20% of UK independent hospital beds. The group also provides specialist psychiatric care and preventative healthcare such as cancer screening. It had sales of £620m in 2002, when it employed the equivalent of 10,474 full-time staff.
