Better known by its brand name BMI Hospitals, General Healthcare is a group of 47 independent hospitals that provide psychiatric care, occupational healthcare and health screening, as well as operations of all types. The London company, owned by funds advised by BC Partners and led by Charles Auld, Ian Smith and Eugene Hayes, sold its subsidiary Partnerships in Care, a chain of rehabilitation homes, to Cinven for about £560m last March. The firm is now bidding to win contracts to run independent sector treatment centres for the NHS. General Healthcare reported sales of £699m in 2004, when operating profits reached a healthy £109m.
