With a £55m LDC-backed management buyout under his belt, founder Martin Penny is rolling out the highly successful GHD brand of ceramic hair stylers around the world. Penny, a former academic and environmental consultant, founded the company in 2001 in West Yorkshire, and now sells GHD stylers through 10,000 beauty salons in Britain. French and German divisions are just starting up, joining operations in Scandinavia, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Australia, South Africa and America. Celebrity endorsements from the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Victoria Beckham have helped to drive up sales 75% a year from £10.8m in 2002 to £57.4m in 2005.
