Global Marine Systems

With a history stretching back to 1850 when the steamship Goliath laid the first telegraph cable to link Britain and France, Global Marine now installs and maintains subsea cables worldwide for the telecoms, defence and energy industries. Projects include laying power cables in the North Sea to connect wind farms, and linking Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad through fibre-optic networks. The Chelmsford company was restructured in 2004 when Bridgehouse Capital led a £72m buyout, with Gabriel Ruhan joining as chief executive. Sales dropped marginally to £186.6m in 2010, but profits rallied to £16.9m.
