The Japanese fondness for travel was spotted by Shigetada Nakanishi and his fellow founders who created tour operator GMCommunications in 1972. It now has subsidiaries across Europe and Asia and its main British operation is Miki Travel in London, run by managing director George Moriuchi. Miki says it offers millions of room nights, and serves thousands of travellers every year, allowing it to negotiate good deals with agents, hotels and service suppliers. In 2006, sales reached £267.2m.
