Livingston-based Grampian Country Food is Britain’s biggest meat packer. The company supplies supermarkets under brands such as Hall’s (sausage and haggis) and Highland Organics, which sources organic chicken from small Scottish farms. The company now employs nearly 20,000 people at 35 locations in Britain, the Netherlands and Thailand. Sales were £1,807m in 2006, and managers think trading has turned the corner after a testing period of rising costs, bird-flu scares and pension-fund deficits. Grampian is run by chairman and majority owner Fred Duncan, who started the business in 1980 from a single chicken farm in Aberdeenshire.
