Great Bear Distribution

Great Bear ‘s trucks, easily spotted by their luminous constellation logo, distribute more than 21,500 loads each year to Sainsbury. They also deliver car parts to Toyota and Vauxhall and tyres for Michelin. The Chester company has 2.7m sq ft of warehousing space, part of which is used to store 7m bottles of wine for BRL Hardy, the Australian winemaker.

David Williams and Colin McDavid founded Great Bear in 1994 with personal savings and a £200,000 equity investment from 3i. Additional services, such as checking the quality of the sportswear it distributes for Umbro, have helped profits grow 36% a year from £1.2m in 1998 to £3.2m in 2001.
