Named after the pinnacle of a surfer’s experience, Green Cathedral was founded in 1996 by Michael Woodley and Paul Putwain. The pair knew how to take their first big wave when it broke. Woodley left Autonomy, the internet software company, to start creating websites for two lawyer friends from his kitchen table.
He was invited to tender for the design and management of Courtline, a system that uses e-mail to deliver confidential information from 80 crown courts to barristers. The company claims to have been the first software developer to use military grade encryption technology in a public-sector project.
Big contracts have followed with the Financial Times, Cambridge University and the dance band Faithless, driving up sales 240% a year, from £181,000 in 1998 to £2.1m in 2000.
