Founded in 1992 by chief executive Andrew Owens, 56, Greenergy now supplies more than a quarter of all road fuel in the UK and sold about 20bn litres of petrol, diesel and biofuel worldwide last year. It supplies fuel in eastern Canada, imports diesel into Brazil and sources used cooking oil globally. In 2017, Owens led a buyout backed by Canadian asset manager Brookfield Business Partners, which acquired a majority stake. Sales include fuel duty and reached £16.8bn in 2018 — up 7%, mainly as a result of international growth.
