Founded as a bedroom start-up in 1992 by chief executive Andrew Owens, Greenergy now serves more than 20% of Britain’s road-fuel market. It supplies 10 billion litres of diesel, petrol and biofuel annually, also providing stock management and haulage services. The London company operates a 250,000-tonne biodiesel facility on the Humber estuary that converts used cooking oils and animal fats. Customers include oil companies, bus networks and supermarkets such as Tesco, which owns 35% of Greenergy. Sales in 2011 were £9,839m including duty, which accounts for more than a third of turnover.
