Inventor Nick Grey, 47, left Vax in 2001 to design his own cordless floor sweeper from his home office, funded by his savings. Taking on established brands such as Dyson, Vax and Hoover, his company’s latest vacuums are cordless, lightweight and intended to be easy to use. The Worcester company also makes cordless sweepers and garden tools, and in August launched an electric bicycle, with a concealed motor and a battery disguised as a water bottle. The popularity of its flagship AirRam vacuum has helped to propel sales tenfold since 2011 to £48.3m last year.
