With the death of Alastair Cooke this year, The Guardian lost one of its most famous alumni. The broadsheet is the flagship of Guardian Media Group, which owns The Observer, a number of radio stations such as Jazz FM, regional and local titles such as the Manchester Evening News, and Guardian Unlimited, one of the most popular websites in Britain. The group’s sales were £356m in 2003, excluding contributions from joint ventures and associates. GMG is owned by the Scott Trust, which was set up in 1936 to ensure the editorial independence of The Guardian and to avoid crippling death duties.
