Three London taxi drivers and a team of experienced entrepreneurs teamed up in 2010 to develop an app that helps passengers book and pay for a taxi using their iPhone or Android handset. To date, Hailo has raised more than $50m from venture capitalists and angel investors, including Sir Richard Branson and from Skype’s founder Niklas Zennstrom’s Atomico fund. Its technology is used by cabbies and consumers in London and 11 cities globally, including New York, Toronto and Madrid. Under co-founder and chief executive Jay Bregman, 34, it plans to launch in Tokyo and Osaka later this year.
