Harvard Engineering provides systems and components that control lights and help save energy. Strong sales of its control components for streetlights, and increased demand for LED lighting, have driven profit growth, boosted further by the firm’s R&D efforts, helped by the government’s tax-credit scheme. Founded in 1993, the Yorkshire firm plans to expand abroad with new offices in Australia and mainland Europe. Under founder and managing director John McDonnell, profits have grown 78% a year, from £606,000 in 2007 to £3.4m in 2010.
