Advances in drug technology and the development of new pharmaceutical treatments are enabling ever more patients with acute and chronic conditions to be treated in the privacy of their own homes. Healthcare at Home operates from 18 centres around the country, sending nurses into the community to treat 40,000 patients a year with conditions ranging from haemophilia to cancer. The company is largely owned by its founder, the former BP executive Charles Walsh, and the private-equity firm Apax Partners. Its sales have grown 70% a year from £51.5m in 2002 to £251.7m in 2005.
