When Charles Walsh, a former BP strategist, launched his home-nursing company in 1992, he was driven by a basic conviction that ‘people feel better and recover faster in their own homes’. He also knew this had been the fastest-growing sector of the American healthcare system for 10 years. Now Healthcare at Home operates 17 regional centres across Britain delivering care, much of it highly specialised, to 30,000 patients at any one time. Patients are referred by NHS consultants and private insurers such as Bupa. Being first in a potentially enormous market with a service endorsed by top professionals has delivered sales growth of 57% a year from £41m in 2001 to £160.1m in 2004.
