Home Bargains’ founder and managing director, Tom Morris, 63, opened his first shop in Liverpool in 1976; its weekly takings were around £85. Last year he paid himself a dividend of £38m after turnover grew 9% to £1.6bn. Tom and his brother Joe, 58, who is operations director, still own all of the business, which has 420 shops nationwide offering branded goods at low prices. It has more than 15,800 staff and is Merseyside’s biggest employer.
