Chris and Anne Fraser set up HotelConnect in 1993 to exploit a niche in the travel market. Many people were giving package holidays a miss but they still wanted hotel accommodation to go with their cheap flight. The London company set out to offer this. ‘It’s easy to book chain hotels, but they are four or five stars and very businesslike,’ says Fraser. ‘We wanted to find the family-run three-star hotel in the middle of town that had been pretty much out of reach.’ Supplying that need has driven up company sales 103% a year from £737,000 in 1997 to £6.2m in 2000, when HotelConnect employed 30 people.
