House of Fraser

This department store chain was founded as a Glasgow drapery shop in 1849 and now has 61 stores, with its first overseas site due to open in Abu Dhabi later this year. Led by chief executive John King, 50, the company is now expanding its own-brand range. Considerable investment in the e-commerce side of its business has led to a 53% rise in online sales. The company is reported to have been put on sale by its current owners, which include the Icelandic bank Landsbanki. Sales reached £695m in the year to January 2013.
