This international group focuses on insurance broking and underwriting. It was formed in 1994 when chief executive David Howden led a buyout from Lloyd’s broker SBJ, backed by venture capitalist BP Marsh & Partners. In 2008 it received further private equity backing when 3i invested £50m. The London-based company has made acquisitions in emerging markets, particularly in southeast Asia. International sales rose 30% a year, from £42.5m in 2009 to £71.4m in 2011.
