Iceland marked its 50th anniversary by operating as an essential service during the lockdown, and saw its founder Sir Malcolm Walker, 74, and chief executive Tarsem Dhaliwal, 56, buy back South African investor Brait’s 63% stake for £115m. Iceland’s 900 sites remained open throughout, and it recruited 1,000 new drivers as it more than doubled its capacity to sell online. Managing director Richard Walker, 39 — Sir Malcolm’s son — has spearheaded environmental initiatives, cutting down on the use of palm oil and plastics.
