Robert Edmiston set up International Motors in 1976 with his £6,000 redundancy payment when his employer, the sports-car manufacturer Jensen, collapsed. Initially the sole distributor for Jensen parts, the West Midlands company bought franchises for Subaru, Isuzu and Daihatsu cars. Edmiston has a second string to his bow in the form of IM Properties, which owns office, retail and industrial properties. Sales in 2006 were £315.1m.
