Bob Edmiston, originally a finance director, set up International Motors in 1976 with his £6,000 redundancy payment when his employer, the sports-car manufacturer Jensen, collapsed. Initially the sole distributor for Jensen parts, the West Midlands company later bought franchises for Subaru, Isuzu and Daihatsu cars and is now one of Britain’s largest private motor vehicle importers. Edmiston has a second string to his bow in the form of IM Properties, which owns office, retail and industrial properties in Germany, France and across Britain. Sales in 2006 were £315.1m.
