Chairman Lord Edmiston was made redundant after his employer, the sports-car maker Jensen Motors, collapsed in 1976. He used his £6,000 payout to set up International Motors, which now owns franchises to distribute Subaru, Isuzu and Daihatsu cars in the UK. Next year the West Midlands company will start importing vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motor Company. Edmiston’s son Andrew now heads IM, which saw sales reach £402.8m in 2010, including the group’s commercial-property business which has assets in Britain, mainland Europe and America.
