Adrian Lucas founded Imerge in 1998 as a spin-out from his former employer, the technology consultant Scientific Generics. The Cambridge firm produces software for audio players that access music stored on hard disks connected to the internet. A number of audio-equipment makers, including Linn and Marantz, have licensed Imerge’s Xiva technology. This has helped boost sales by 106% a year from £343,000 in 1999 to £1.5m in 2001, with big losses. Imerge has raised £11m of venture capital, including £2.5m in September 2001.
