Adrian Lucas founded Imerge in 1998 as a spin-out from his former employer, the technology consultant Scientific Generics. The Cambridge firm produces software for audio players that access music stored on hard disks. Several audio-equipment makers, including Marantz and Integra, have licensed Imerge’s technology. After expansion in America and Australia, sales have grown 57% a year from £807,000 in 2000 to £2m in 2002, although the company made a large loss. Bruce Macaulay, chief executive, and Toby Wilson Waterworth, chief finance officer, were brought in earlier this year to refinance the business.
