In 1847 two Scots partnered to ship mail between Calcutta and Rangoon and they formed Inchcape Shipping Services. With offices in 63 countries offering marine services and cargo logistics, the group is still diversifying and recently bought a travel agency for the marine, offshore and yachting industries. Owner Istithmar World Capital, part of the troubled Dubai World, has put it up for sale for a reported £550m having backed a £166m secondary buyout in 2006 from Electra Partners. Sales rose in 2009 to £322.1m.
