This group was created in 1998 with a management buyout of part of Inspec’s chemicals division. Through acquisitions it has grown into the UK’s second-largest chemicals company and claims to be the world’s largest producer of air-conditioning fluids. It had sales of £1,457m in 2002. A sister company, Ineos Chlor, last year applied to the Department of Trade and Industry for a £50m rescue package for a chemicals plant in Cheshire that it had purchased from ICI.
