Intec was founded in 1981 to carry out non-destructive testing on nuclear power stations, gas pipelines and oil platforms. It has evolved into a recruitment agency providing engineering personnel to clients including London Underground and Rolls-Royce. It also offers quality and safety systems training for oil and gas industry workers as well as consultancy services. John Hepworth, the co-founder and managing director, says Intec’s unique mix of services has boosted sales by 76% a year, from £948,000 in 1996 to £5.1m in 1999. The company has recently focused on export markets but was hit by the downturn in the Far East’s tiger economies. Expected contracts in Asia failed to materialise and exports fell from 70% of sales in 1998 to 20% in 1999, forcing the company to target Europe for new business. In the past year it has won contracts in Germany and Lithuania.
