This Cambridge company developed Runescape, which it claims is the world’s largest free online game. Jagex says that more than 10m people have registered for the game, benefiting from 15,000 hours of free play before having to pay a membership fee. The company was founded in 2001 by brothers Andrew and Paul Gower and Constant Tedder, who in recent years have stepped back from business operations to concentrate on developing games. In January 2004, Insight Venture Partners bought a 35% stake in the company for an undisclosed sum. Sales have grown 84% a year from £5.2m in 2005 to £32.3m in 2008.
